JODY GRIFFIN PETERSON
Biography
The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky,
from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider's web.
Pablo Picasso
Art is central in my life.
I can be inspired by a shadow on a wall, ripples on the beach, a pleat in a shirt, or a broken dish. I am taken in by color and design, observing the slightest details, even as a young child.
My interests led me to pursue a BFA degree in printmaking which resulted in a career as a textile, wall covering and graphic designer. Whether imagining patterns, or designing logos, I enjoy the challenge of problem solving while creating work which is pleasing to the eye, through color, line, and spacial relationships.
Currently, I am rediscovering my passion for art through representational and abstract painting. Subject matters spring from the energy I feel while painting the serenity of water, the power of nature or my love for people.
In recent years, I traveled several times to India while helping develop a hostel for young girls, I was inspired by the vibrant, bold colors. Combining this with my love of pattern and design, I often incorporate fabric, wall covering and pastel creating rich multi layered paintings.
During 2020, an unusual year due to the pandemic, I have spent many hours gardening in my backyard and creating a studio space where I can be messy and playful. As in gardening, I enjoy the tactile experience of getting my hands dirty, while laying out the right color, value or texture to form the overall composition.
I am grateful to have discovered new relationships with fellow painters, and feel as though I am embarking on an exciting chapter of artistic expression.
